If you have been considering
laser vision surgery, we are ready to answer all of your questions and to
assist you in the many phases of this exciting new procedure, from the
initial consultation, to the surgery and follow-up. Our team has extensive
experience and we have formed solid relationships with the top local laser
surgery centers in the area, ensuring that you have a pleasant, professional
experience and obtain optimum surgical results.
A
free consultation will be performed with one of our Refractive
Surgery Coordinators. At this time, we will measure your current
prescription and determine if you may be a candidate for laser
vision correction. We will ask that you view a short video and a
Refractive Surgery Coordinator will discuss the risks and benefits
of laser vision correction. We will also discuss the several
different types of correction.
It is our office policy to make LASIK affordable for all budgets.
Payment and financing options will be discussed with you.
A thorough eye examination will be performed by our doctor
following your consultation. If you are a contact lens wearer, it
will be necessary for you to wear glasses for a period of time to
allow your eye to return to its natural shape to ensure very
precise measurements. Soft contacts require seven days; toric soft
or rigid gas permeable require two weeks; and hard contacts
require a minimum of four weeks. During your eye exam, we will
determine the health of your eyes, the shape of your cornea, AND
determine the amount of correction required to help reduce or
eliminate your dependence on glasses and/or contact lenses. We
will be happy to discuss any questions you may have regarding
laser vision correction at that time.
Our doctor will then decide if laser vision correction is for you.
If you are a good candidate, we will then schedule your surgery,
which is done in the comfort and convenience of our office. We
will schedule a date and time for your surgery, as well as a time
for your one-day follow-up appointment.
Its natural to feel nervous before your procedure. On the day of
your procedure you should arrive 30 minutes prior to
your surgery time. Please allow approximately two hours for the
entire process. Wear comfortable clothing and do not use creams,
lotions, eye makeup, perfume/cologne or hairspray. You do need to
bring someone to drive you home following your procedure.
Immediately prior to your procedure, your eyelids and lashes will
be cleaned and antibiotic and anesthetic drops will be placed in
your eye(s). A mild sedative may be given to help you relax. Once
you are prepared for your procedure, you will be escorted to the
laser suite for treatment.
The information gathered during your eye exam is used to program
the laser. The laser calculates the required treatment and exact
number of pulses to be delivered. The laser normally takes less
than 60 seconds per eye, depending on the amount of correction,
and the entire procedure is 5-7 minutes per eye.
Following your procedure, you will be escorted to an exam room
where you may sit for a few minutes, with your eyes closed, to
rest. The doctor will examine the results of the procedure and
clear, plastic eye shields will be placed over your eyes to
protect the flap while sleeping. LASIK patients may experience
some irritation or discomfort, but this usually only lasts for a
few hours. Sleep is strongly recommended after the procedure and
most patients are quite comfortable after taking a short nap.
You will be seen for a one-day post-operative check-up by our
doctor and further instructions will be explained to you at that
time. We will then ask that you return for a one week, ONE month,
THREE MONTH, and six month check-up.
Follow-up care and eye drops are just as important to your results
as your actual procedure. Periodic examinations are required to
ensure that your eye is healing as expected and to measure your
visual progress. The follow-up appointments generally take 5-15
minutes.
We strongly recommend that everyone continue to have an annual eye
exam even following laser vision correction to ensure that your
eyes are healthy.
